Goal 2 aims to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030. It also commits to universal access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food at all times of the year. This will require sustainable food production systems and resilient agricultural practices, equal access to land, technology and markets and international cooperation on investments in infrastructure and technology to boost agricultural productivity.

Nuclear technology strengthens food security through plant mutation breeding to create crop varieties that are more resistant to drought, disease, and salinity. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) — birth control for pests — uses radiation to suppress populations of insects like the Mediterranean fruit fly, protecting harvests without chemical pesticides. Furthermore, isotopic techniques allow scientists to track soil health and optimise fertiliser use, ensuring that more food is grown using fewer resources while preventing land degradation.
