The oceans provide critical natural resources like food and medicines, regulate the climate and act as a buffer against storm damage. Despite their importance, irresponsible exploitation and plastic pollution have led to alarming levels of degradation and acidification. Goal 14 aims to prevent and reduce marine pollution, regulate fisheries to end overfishing and increase funding for ocean science to protect marine and coastal ecosystems.

Nuclear and isotopic techniques are the gold standard for monitoring ocean acidification — allowing researchers to track the absorption of carbon dioxide and its impact on marine organisms like coral reefs. The IAEA’s Marine Environment Laboratories use nuclear tracers to study the movement of microplastics through the food chain and to detect harmful algal blooms that threaten seafood safety. This scientific data is crucial for international efforts to restore ocean health and maintain the biodiversity of our seas through evidence-based policy.
