Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, everywhere, disrupting national economies and affecting lives. SDG 13 seeks to strengthen countries’ climate resilience and adaptive capacity, with a special focus on supporting least-developed countries. It emphasises the need for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and integrate climate change measures into national policies and strategies.

Beyond providing carbon-free energy, nuclear science is a powerful tool for monitoring and adapting to climate change. Isotopic techniques are used to study carbon sequestration in soils and forests, helping scientists understand how to better remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Additionally, these technologies help track the retreat of glaciers and changes in sea levels — providing the data necessary for countries to develop robust adaptation strategies and protect vulnerable populations from the intensifying impacts of a warming planet.
