Using a New Radiotherapy Technique to Cut Cancer Treatment Times in Half
A new radiotherapy technique for treating head and neck cancer could reduce treatment times by nearly half. The technique, tested by the IAEA in a study across ten low- and middle-income countries, involves fewer but higher doses of radiation over a shorter period. The results showed similar clinical outcomes to standard radiotherapy treatments, suggesting that this approach could help countries shorten waitlists and enable more patients to receive timely treatment. The IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative aims to strengthen countries’ capacities to combat cancer by providing life-saving equipment and training. The new technique offers a cost-effective and convenient tool to navigate resource constraints in cancer treatment.
